Is it normal for younger bucks to not have brow tines?

I am not sure if it is normal for a young buck to not have brow tines, I think there are many other factors involved in determining what a buck is going to have on his head this year.
Mostly Genetics, nutrition, and age in that order are the main factors,
I've noticed the same thing this year, John. I think the drought is affecting them more than normal. I saw a 4.5 year old buck this year that scored in the 130's and had tiny brow tines.

Yes it is! and especially in this drought..... The first year for a buck deer is like a child learning how to walk...The benefit of the doubt goes to the deer...
Our first year on our lease, every other buck was a cull...Man we had a lot of work cleaning this up with only three hunters on 600ac...with everyone wanting a trophy tag that only left us with three cull tags and i was glad of it cause the next year we could not find a cull deer no where they all turn out to be good young bucks....
This year back to being cull bucks due to the drought....Rule for this year no cull bucks will be taken!!...
BTW JR...tiny brows on that size of a deer will be considered management deer and most ranches he will be on the dead list...
He's on my dead list if I can ever get a shot at him! The place I saw him was on a friend's 25 acres, so not much trophy management can be done on that sized place with a bunch of other similar sized tracts on all sides.
