Hebbronville Labor for Cull Hunt

Ok Guys sorry it took so long to post but I have been busy lately (for a change) and have been
lax in my duties.
To recap Myself and 4 other members of TCHA went to Mr. Robert Scherer of American Rodsmiths, ranch north of Hebbronville.

The weekend before Thanks giving we built a 5x12 pantry addition to his kitchen trailer.
just 3weeks past we returned to hunt the weekend. Man o man we had a great time there.

The Carpenters, the Walker brothers got 4 does, 1 was (the mystery shot).

The Plumber and the Electrition got 3 does. and I got a doe and a nice buck.
The buck is a bittersweet kill, but still great just the same.
Robert told us that around new years a hunter shot a buck but did not kill it.
He video tapes all his hunts and I saw the tape, looked like a kill shot to me.

Robert said that the deer did not die, and if he looks in bad shape to shoot him,
I guess he dont want deer suffering and possiably die thru the winter.

I for one agree with that for sure!!!

Well just like the blind squirrel that finds a acorn once in a while, On the first hunt (friday evening) I was in the stand looking for does and spikes, and way way down the sendero
all of a sudden there was a buck with a great rack standing in the middle of the sendero,
He was just standing there looking majestic and all that good stuff, and he I guess wanted to get out of there so he took a step, only it was not a step it was like he wanted to jump a 3 strand fence. He rared back and kind of tried to leap and then I saw it!
His right front leg was broken, BAD flapping like bird wing bad.

I watched thuough my Nikon Binos for another couple of "steps" and could not take it any more!
The problem was I dont want to make a mistake and make our host upset or worse mad.
I have to worry about the reputation of our organization and the members counting on me to keep this thing going, but this shot HAD TO BE MADE!

He was farther out than I am comfortable shooting but he was making his way to the thick stuff and it had to be done right then. I grabbed my rifle centered my cross hairs and let one fly!
After a 10 munite wait I made the hike and found him piled up about 5 yards away from where he was when I shot!!

Very nice Cull man!!!.... Sounds like you made the landowner happy by removing him from the ranch. What rifle/scope did you use to take him down with...how far away do you think it was from the blind?.....I love that Jim Hogg country!!

Thanks RD..........I used my 1955 Remington model 721 in 270 win with a Nikon 3x9
Pro staff scope, and he had to be around 220 yrds out at least!!

PS. sorry no pics of the does we were so busy cleaning deer and telling lies
we plumb forgot(rookie mistake)

Cull hunting all my life I have had to let bucks like that walk.
so its pretty cool to get one once in a while!!!
